The first case of wheelchair rage is currently being heard in Britain's courts. An 82 year old former paratrooper has been convicted of grievous bodily harm after mowing down a retired holidaymaker with his wheelchair.
The defendant was heard shouting: 'Get out of the way you old bitch' to the unassuming pedestrian before careering into her in his battery-driven chair. The 70 year old woman suffered a broken ankle and cuts and bruises as a result of the unprovoked attack.
The defendant's brief told the magistrates court that he did not intend to harm the victim in any way and that 'he did find it difficult to control the wheelchair.' However, the defendant's several previous convictions, including one for murder in 1950, makes it difficult to believe this was merely a case of reckless driving.
