A Brazilian businessman is facing criminal charges after confessing he hired a friend to chop his arm off to collect insurance of more than $465,000, Sao Paulo police have confirmed.
Sebastiao Jose Rodrigues, 31, is now recovering in hospital. But later this month he will stand trial on charges of mutilation, fraud and false testimony. Joining him in the dock will be his pregnant wife and the friend.
Rodrigues, who has his own small telephone business, paid $165 to his friend in return for chopping his left arm off with an axe. He hoped to collect money under three separate insurance agreements.
Investigators started suspecting him when they noticed discrepancies in the evidence of Rodrigues and his wife. He confessed after police found the insurance documents at his home.
