The cost benefits of a new market where doctors advertise their services and health tourism becomes more widespread were highlighted by one speaker at the AMII conference.
Dr Thom Van Every, chief medical officer at PatientChoice, said insurers needed to offer customers more choice if costs are to be driven down in the private healthcare sector.
"No one knows the cost of different treatments. If services were advertised, it would bring down prices," he said.
Dr Van Every said that insurers should also look to send patients abroad for cheaper treatment. "Insurers will have to take advantage of these opportunities. Everything points to people demanding more choice," he said.
