The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has released an updated version of its private medical insurance (PMI) guide for consumers. The revised edition builds on the original guide published in 1999.

Richard Walsh, head of health at the ABI, said the guide is of the utmost importance to all consumers considering taking out PMI cover.

'There are no short cuts when it comes to safeguarding your health. This is why our guide is essential reading for anyone considering taking out medical insurance,' he said.

The ABI is also releasing a revised consumer guide on income protection (IP) to complement its Statement of Best Practice released earlier in the year. It will look at IP in relation to other healthcare products such as PMI, long term care insurance and critical illness cover.
