The Association of Medical Insurance Intermediaries (AMII) has announced it will launch a consumer campaign in a bid to raise consciousness of private medical insurance (PMI).

Besides attempting to raise consumer awareness, the campaign, to be rolled out in January 2006, will be aimed at addressing certain issues and highlighting the benefits of specialist independent advice.

Stephen Walker, chairman of AMII, said: "We must get across that choice costs money and paying for private medical treatment either comes from savings, borrowings or insurance.

"Insurance is a way of pre-funding treatment, based on 'risk', that makes private healthcare available to more people."
