Nearly all companies are unaware of the value of having private medical insurance (PMI), delegates at the COVER Protection Forum were told.
Thom Van Every, chief medical officer at PatientChoice argued the benefits of having PMI were largely ignored by employers.
He said: "According to the Employee Benefits Survey in March 2006, of 383 companies, 94% did not calculate the value of health cover."
However, it is not all doom and gloom for the corporate PMI sector as the same survey also showed that 68% of companies offered health insurance and it was the second most popular benefit offered, he added.
An in-house survey of 15,000 primary school staff, conducted by PatientChoice, showed sickness absence arises primarily due to medical reasons (53%) and stress (26%).
