Newly-qualified consultants will be obliged to dedicate 48 hours a week to the NHS under a new consultants' contract due to be introduced in April 2003.
Set rules will outline when consultants are allowed to perform private work and all work will be time-tabled.
Alan Milburn, health secretary, said: 'The new contract is good news for NHS patients and consultants. It offers more pay for consultants, so more NHS patients benefit from more of their precious time and skills. Crucially, it recognises and rewards those NHS consultants who do most for the NHS.'
