Labour MP and ex-welfare reform minister Frank Field has been appointed by insurer Medicash as a non-executive director on its board of healthcare.

Field said he planned on devising strategies to help increase uptake of health insurance in his new role.

'The Government has embarked on turning a worker-led NHS into a 21st century consumer-dominated organi-sation. This should offer enormous opportunities to Medicash to suggest ways to the Government by which collective services can be provided, which are nothing whatsoever to do with the State.'

Medicash chief executive, Bill Gaywood, said he had high hopes for the new recruit. 'Frank Field is one of the most dynamic thinkers on the future of health services and I believe he will make an enormous contribution,' he said.
