BUPA Individual Protection has paid out 200 from a total of around 300 critical illness (CI) claims since it was set up. The largest sum paid out was £750,000 for a permanent disability claim. It paid out an average of nearly £79,000 on all its CI claims. Of the claims turned down, 8.4% were declined due to non-disclosure and 13.1% because they did not meet the policy definition. The majority of claims were for cancer and myocardial infarction. Steve Casey, product manager at BUPA Individual protection, said: "It is important to remember that, relatively speaking, BUPA is still a small fish compared with other providers when it comes to CI."
