The cheapest is not always the best option and customers can be left disappointed. A few extra pence each month could buy a bereavement counselling service or a back to work help service on an income protection policy over and above the basic cover.

While the cash payout from a protection policy is the main reason that most people buy protection, it is not just the money that solves problems when things go wrong.

Extra help and support such as counselling can be invaluable and for some can really make the difference in getting their lives back on track.

The focus on price implies no other factor is important but the reality is that by taking a little advice from an IFA could result in a purchase that offers much better value for money than the cheapest price angle implies.

In most markets whether you are buying a chicken or teabags, value for money is what many people seek. So why should protection be any different?

4 Apple app

Most of us are used to browsing the App Store and downloading games, social media utilities and other programmes. The majority of these apps are priced at only 69p. For that very small sum you can get a really high quality piece of software.

This is phenomenal value for money. The great thing about setting the price point at 69p is that on average many people have that amount of loose change in their pocket at the end of each day. So buying an app does not really feel like they are spending real money.
