Intana has been registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), so that its services can be assessed to show they meet the necessary standards.
The CQC regulates health and care standards in England. Intana is the assistance and claims management division of Collinson Group, and offers international support across travel, medical, accident and health needs.
Under the current regulations an outsourced assistance provider such as Intana is not obligated to register with the CQC however they can elect to do so.
In a statement about the registration, Intana said: "Intana recognises the importance of regulation within health service provision and it is therefore a demonstration of its commitment to providing the best care to travellers across the globe"
The CQC will regulate two areas of Intana's services, those covering transport triage and medical advice provided remotely as well as treatment of diseases, disorders and injuries.
Criteria for assessment include safety and quality standards and are based on the regulations in the Health and Social Care Act of 2008.
The CQC received an increase in registrations in the first quarter of this year compare to the year before, up by over 6,000 to 23,965 applications. At the same time there has been an increase in the robustness of registration application assessments, and the CQC consequently saw a reduction in the number of applications being processed within 8 weeks to 75%. It has also recently announced that it will award ratings for private hospitals from April 2015.
Jude McSharry, medical director of Intana commented: "We are dedicated to providing customers with safe, effective, high-quality care and this registration is testament of that commitment.
"The CQC registration offers independent confirmation of the excellence of the team of professionals that we have at the Intana assistance centre."
