VSP develops health-tracking technology for glasses

VSP Global has announced the development of a prototype combining health-tracking technology into the frames of a pair of glasses.

The glasses have sensors housed within a pair of frames from maker Dragon Alliance. They track steps, calories burned, activity time and distance travelled.

The device syncs via Bluetooth to an app which allows the user to monitor their activity in real time.

The project, called "Project Genesis" has been in development over the past 12 months at VSP's innovation lab, The SHOP.

The first version is being tested by 26 employees of VSP Global who are part of the company's wellness program at the company's headquarters in Sacramento, California.

Newer versions are already being designed to include more frame designs and to provide more meaningful health data.

VSP entered the UK market in 2014 providing cash allowances for eye examinations, glasses and contact lenses as an employee benefit.

Rob Lynch, CEO of VSP Global, said: "As disruption continues to change our industry, VSP Global businesses need to stay ahead of the curve and provide forward-thinking solutions that meet the changing eye care and eyewear needs of consumers."

Jay Sales, co-lead at SHOP, said: "Ultimately, this is not about just tracking steps and calories.

"The goal with this project is to build on these initial capabilities and, in the future, provide our members with contextual health data about themselves that they can then use to feel empowered and make better decisions in their lives."
