Friends Life has raised £140,000 for the Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre which will go towards initiatives including a welfare benefits advice service.

The insurance provider began its fundraising in 2013 for the purpose-built centre at the hospital in Stevenage. It has reached its fundraising target a year earlier than expected.

The new centre is part of an overhaul of the Lister hospital's cancer services and will replace the "currently oversubscribed" facilities.

Friends Life employees across the country took part in a range of activities to raise the funds for the centre, including The World's Biggest Coffee Morning, a ‘Tough Mudder' obstacle challenge and Christmas raffles.

The funds raised by Friends Life will enable Macmillan to provide an Information and Support Centre within the cancer centre that will offer a welfare benefits advice service to anyone affected by cancer.

Advice on issues such as benefits, tax credits, grants and loans will be available.

Kerry Briars, Macmillan Fundraising Manager for Hertfordshire said: "It is fantastic that staff at Friends Life have raised such a huge amount. People are often in shock after a cancer diagnosis."

"Financial worries can cause huge additional stress. The Welfare Benefits Service will make an enormous difference to people affected by cancer in North and East Hertfordshire."
