Increasing numbers are seeking international private medical insurance (PMI) as more Britons emigrate, according to Axa.
The insurer said it has seen an 11.7% increase in the number of product enquiries in 2007 and a 15% increase in similar enquiries throughout 2008. If this continues, Axa said, it could lead to the number of people leaving the UK exceeding 500,000 this year.
Karen Teasdale, overseas and expatriate manager for Axa PPP Healthcare, said: "We're seeing more and more people relocating abroad - either because of their work or to start a new life. Due to the variations in healthcare arrangements from country to country, it is important for individuals to make adequate provision for their healthcare needs - especially as we see new destinations growing in popularity as people seek to take advantage of cheaper living costs and better weather."
A poll conducted by YouGov last year revealed that a third of Britons were debating whether to emigrate because of financial concerns.
